I enjoyed the new adaptation of Mean Girls. The writers did a good job of reimagining it. The highlights enhanced the film in many ways and connected it to the original source.
The movie creators have taken great care in preserving the energy of the original film to adapt Mean Girls to the new generation. The plot still revolves around Cady Heron who was originally played by Tina Fey and is now played by Angourie Rice. I was caught off guard by the movie taking a big step forward and expanding the original plot introducing new characters and storylines and making it a musical. The new idea was different but it turns out that it made the movie fit in with today’s generation.
The movie addresses new issues that were not acknowledged years ago. Themes like mental health and social media stress have been added. I found that this was more relatable to social media today. I saw in the original movie that Cady showed some signs of depression and had intense anxiety. She had given in to the Mean Girls’ attacks of manipulation which caused her to give in to peer pressure. She often cared about what they had to say. Especially the way she dressed. They convinced her to only dress in the color that mocks their reputation as ruthless and villainess charm that is pink.
The adaptation follows the original style and enhances it. The new movie is more relevant and insightful to today’s generation. It definitely betters the new norm and portrays the realities of high school experience. The movie also sends a powerful message about self-acceptance and the value of one’s originality.
