The start of this school year brought a flood of new additions to the school, primarily many policy changes imposed for the safety of students. Last year, tardies were naturally excused and did not hold many disciplinary consequences. This year, our school implemented a new system that will require all late students to line up and print out a tardy slip.
When caught late to any block, students are expected to line up at one of the many stations around the school to grab a tardy slip. To get one, you must enter your ID, select tardy sweep, take the slip, and head to class. Some students, however, have brought up problems with the policy “I have been late to one class. Instead of being 10 seconds late, I was 10 minutes late and ended up missing a quiz over it” senior Kaleb Gilbert said, while others have no problem with the policy “I don’t really care” senior Alessandro Adolphi said.
Most staff have positive views towards the tardy sweep policy, primarily teachers. “Overall, I like it because it’s decreasing tardies and kids are in the class more,” Mrs. Katherine Wood said. The pros outweigh the cons, “I understand by sending everybody to go get a tardy pass, it actually extends the time that their out of the classroom but at the same time, in that particular case with the student who might have missed a test, that’s a natural consequence of being tardy.” Mrs. Wood said.
