Chappell Roan, a newly famous pop music star, has left fans questioning if she’s really cut out for being a celebrity and whether they want to keep supporting her.
Chappell Roan released her first song in 2015 at the age of 17, with her 2017 EP following. However, in 2020, she released “Pink Pony Club,” which represented her shift in music genre from slightly indie to more pop-like. The song was featured on her first album, released in 2022, titled “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Her rise to stardom happened when she released her hit single, titled “Good Luck, Babe!” in April of 2024; she has been growing considerably since then.
Chappell takes inspiration in her stage presence, costumes and campy makeup from drag queens, especially since she is known as an LGBTQ+ icon, as all her feature her experiences as a lesbian.
After blowing up seemingly overnight and basking in the spotlight for a while, Chappell Roan has done some things that fans have deemed questionable. After a few fans met her in public and asked for hugs and photos, Roan refused and later made a video speaking on the topic of “celebrity harassment” and the fact that stars “don’t owe you anything.”
Later, Roan cancelled her shows at music festivals in New York and Maryland just a day before she was supposed to appear; this enraged fans, as many of them bought tickets and flew across the country primarily to see her. The venues didn’t allow for refunds of these individuals’ tickets due to the short notice. Roan’s reasoning resides in the fact that she has her own mental health issues and stated that she needs to prioritize herself at this point in her life.
Many fans are reconsidering their level of support for Roan because of these issues and believe that because she chose this path for her life to take, the path of being a celebrity, she does in fact owe her fans hugs, pictures and the follow through of commitments such as shows.
One former fan posted a TikTok video with the caption “We’ve witnessed the rise of a midwest princess, is this the fall?”
