Many people think the Commonwealth of Virginia votes blue, but the majority actually votes red. So why do all the maps show blue?
There are three areas of Virginia that are highly populated: Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Chesapeake Bay area. As of a 2023 census, Norfolk had a population of 230,930 people, Virginia Beach had 453,649 people and the Chesapeake Bay area had 253,886 people.
These highly populated areas often vote blue near unanimously and turn the entire Commonwealth from red to blue.
You can see here that the areas with the most blue highlighting are the Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake Bay areas.
In conclusion, the reason the Commonwealth of Virginia swings from Republican to Democrat So drastically is because it has three highly populated areas.
