Transformers One, the eighth movie in the Transformers movie series, has been released to critical and audience acclaim. While the change from VFX to animation was at first divisive, Rotten Tomatoes states that “Transformers One suggests that animation might be the optimal medium for this oft-adapted franchise.”
Transformers One is a prequel to the original movies, taking place on Cybertron, the homeworld of the Transformers and following two unimportant mining robots Orion Pax and D-16, who would become Optimus Prime and Megatron, who were at the time close friends, detailing the story of their fallout and what divided the two sides into their never-ending ideological war.
With the change in style came a change in voice acting, with plenty of familiar names: Chris Hemsworth as Orion, Brian Tyree Henry as D-16, Keegan Michael Key as B-127, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1 and several other notable names all contributed as leading or supporting roles to add to the star-studded cast for the film.
Before and during the release of the film, producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura stated that depending on its success, there would be sequels that would continue to depict the events that led up to the original Transformers film and that there were already plans to stretch the plot over three movies. Although the film only grossed a disappointing $127 million dollars, the support from audiences and critics alike may paint a bright future for those who are hopeful for future prequels and insight on how the events of the initial Transformers movie series that began in 2007 came to be.
