With the announcement of Midnights by Taylor Swift on August 28th, we’ve had almost two months of anticipation for this brand-new album. Many fans thought it would be the completion of the Folklore/Evermore trio or even a second reputation, but what we got instead could be classified as all of the above.

With songs that made me dance and songs that made me cry, Midnights is easily one of the most versatile albums of the year. The song Lavender Haze features a pop-y beat that could be considered clubbing music, Swift also included slower ballads such as Sweet Nothing, a softer song that you could fall asleep to.

Many of the songs on Midnights feature relatable lyrics as well as iconic mentions of her ex-boyfriends and current boyfriend. Swift also, (allegedly), dedicated another song, (Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve), to John Mayer. Swift shows that she has no shame in dissing the people that have wronged her in the past, and I’m here for the shade!

Midnights critics argue that we were “robbed” of another Folklore/Evermore album, but I have to disagree since both of those albums are only two of ten albums in Swift’s discography. The rest of her albums are either pop or country, so it’s not shocking that Midnights is more pop than her previous albums. Also, Midnights features calmer songs like “High Infidelity” that could be on either Folklore or Evermore, if these “fans” were more open-minded.

On the brighter side, Midnights has definitely been one of Swift’s most fun albums, being the fourth album, she owns (excluding the rerecording of her earlier albums). Taylor has also been very vocal throughout the creation of this album, engaging fans in many Midnight adventures, such as the release of her song names via bingo balls and the constant merch releases leading up to the album release date.

Overall, the interactivity of this album, variety of songs, and excellent lyricism make this album a 10/10 in my mind!
