As the weather warms up and the school year comes to an end, spring sports are making their long-awaited return. Among them is Track and Field, a popular sport that gives students the opportunity to compete and join in running, jumping and throwing events.
Track & Field has been a busy sport every year, with 124 students this year being considered a low amount compared to previous years. Apart from paperwork and concussion training, to join Track & Field, “you are put through a variety of time trials that assess your ability to run shorter or longer distances, strength tests and general athleticism…we’re always evaluating for attitude and effort and basically if they are a good fit for the culture of the team” said Coach Connor Lee.
“But yeah, anybody and everybody is welcome to come and try out…Track and Field is a diverse sport in terms of the events we offer” said Coach Lee.
Track and Field has a multitude of different activities and different coaches who lead those activities. Practice for Track and Field starts off with warm-ups and activation exercises. Three days a week, athletes run hard with short sprints, long sprints and races. “Other days, they’re going easy because you can’t go hard every day” said Coach Lee. If you’re thinking about joining Track & Field, “come in prepared, even if you come in having run two or three times a week prior to track, that’s going to prep you a lot more than deciding to get off the couch one day and run track. So just make sure that you’re doing the things to be prepared.” Said Coach Lee.
