Do watch, Do Revenge
September 22, 2022
From cliché movie to drama that keeps you guessing, Do Revenge, released to Netflix on September 16th, puts a suspenseful spin on the teen-movie genre.
The film follows high school student Drea Torres, played by Camila Mendes. Drea has curated the perfect life, perfect school, perfect friends, and perfect boyfriend in an attempt to set her life on the path of attending Yale. That is until her plan unravels when her boyfriend, “allegedly,” spreads a lewd video of her to the whole school. In distress Drea seeks help from new student Eleanor, Maya Hawke, and they agree to “do each other’s revenge.” What follows is a series of twists, turns and teenage drama.
Written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Do Revenge takes inspiration from the psychological thriller Strangers on a Train (1951), while also paying homage to many ‘90s teen movies such as Scream, Heathers, 10 Things I Hate About You and Jawbreaker.
One of the standout factors from this movie was the cast, comprised of ‘Netflix all-stars,’ such as Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Camila Mendes (Riverdale), Austin Abrams (Dash and Lily), Jonathan Daviss (Outer Banks), Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why), Talia Ryder (Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between), and Paris Berelc (Alexa and Katie).
Aside from the cast, the aesthetics were another of the movie’s best factors. For a dark comedy, the film took a different approach with the wardrobe, dressing most of the characters in pastels, and the set design, which was also pastel. The color palette provided a contrast from the events going on during the film and connected perfectly with the campy dialogue.
The most disappointing component of this movie was the pacing; it seemed to jump from plot point to plot point. The film’s resolution was underdeveloped, and the others accepted all the terrible things the characters did unrealistically.
Despite the movie’s flaws, it was one of the better movies that Netflix has put out this year. So, curl up on the couch, grab some friends, try not to take it too seriously and watch Do Revenge.
