The Amazing Race Around DC: Senior Class Field Trip

Underclassmen in Prince William County took their PSAT on October 12th, and while they were sitting in a testing room, Seniors at Gainesville High School were roaming around the Washington Monument in DC.

“I don’t think anyone was able to sleep that night because we were all so excited,” said Menna Helal, senior class vice-president.

After students arrived at school, they were instructed to meet in the auditorium to discuss topics such as graduation gowns, graduation, and other additional information seniors need to know. From there, everyone was assigned their chaperone, and charter bus number and given their custom “Amazing Race” T-Shirt.

“Personally, I really liked the design and couldn’t wait to wear it because [of] how I haven’t had that complete field trip experience since elementary school,” Helal said.

In addition to the informational session, students were split into their competitive or non-competitive groups. During the sign-up procedure for the trip, the option was given to either compete in an “Amazing Race” style competition around the national mall, inspired by the reality tv show, or to go non-competitive and enjoy different museums in DC.

“Students were allowed to go anywhere as long as they stayed within the boundaries of the national mall. For my group, we decided to go to the National Art Museum, which I’ve never been to before, and it was absolutely mesmerizing. the art was literally breathtaking, and if I could’ve, I would’ve stayed there all day just looking at paintings.” Helal said.

Students enjoyed being able to explore DC freely. Groups went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, The National Gallery of Art, The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The Sculpture Garden, and many others.

“We met up with our chaperones around 12:45 pm to get lunch. We were allowed to get food from any of the surrounding areas in the national mall. After taking a group picture in front of the Washington Monument, we got back on the buses to go home.” said senior Dawnie Huynh.

The Senior class seemed to have had a great time on the trip, and hope it is one that can become a tradition for years to come.
