On January 7th, 2024, the 81st Golden Globes ceremony opened with Jo Koy, an American comedian and actor, and his heavily misogynistic monologue. The comedian was asked to host the event. Since he is a well-known comedian, he thought to use what he’s known for. However, nobody expected the insensitive remarks made at women’s expense.  

“Oppenheimer” is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is based on a plastic doll with big boobies.” Koy said. 

In one of my prior stories, I wrote about the sheer amount of feminism in the Barbie movie and how impactful it was for women empowerment all around the world. To have a man deliberately go out of his way to make crude and sexist jokes just shows how poorly he understood the movie.  

“And Margot [Robbie], it’s not always about you. The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet. Or what casting directors call character actor.” Koy said. 

Women endure so much more than what they need to. A woman can date the same amount as a man, but she will get called a “player” while he will be called a “stud.” She can want to be paid the same amount of money as a man and she will be called “greedy.” No matter what a woman does; it will always be her fault.  

I was sat with my grandmother at the dining table when she picked up a magazine with a beautiful woman on the front.  

“God, these women try so hard to look fake,” she said. 

She places down the magazine to pick up another with a man doing the same thing, but she described him as a “beautiful man.” 

Why is it that women are always judged? We do the same things as men, yet the backlash comes to us. 

This is why the Barbie movie was so important to our society. It reversed the roles where women held the power, and the men were subject to the judgement of the patriarchy. It showed the audience the treatment women have been getting for decades.  

Things like Jo Koy’s speech are why women feel like we are not getting anywhere with our respect. Just when you think we are starting to get somewhere; people like Jo Koy take us another step backwards.
