People all around the world celebrate a variety of different holidays during the winter season. From Christmas to Hanukkah, let’s reflect on some of the most commonly celebrated holidays this season.
Beginning with one of the most recognizable holidays; Christmas! Christmas is celebrated on December 25th primarily in The United States and Europe, by Christians. It celebrates the birth of Christ. Notably, Christmas is now celebrated by many non-Christians as well!
Then, we have Hanukkah! Hanukkah is an 8-day long Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It lasts 8 days because of the miracle of the oil that lasted 8 days. It is celebrated by lighting a menorah, a type of candelbrum, playing games such as dreidel and eating foods like latkes. The holiday symbolizes religious freedom and miracles.
Next is Kwanza! Kwanza is a week-long celebration of African heritage, celebreated from December 26th to January 1st. Established in 1966 to promote unity, self-determination and cultural pride with each day focusing on one of the seven principles (Nguzo Saba). The holiday includes lighting a Kinara, a type of candleholder and spending time with family.
There is also Los Posadas! Celebrated in Central America and Hispanic communities, primarily Mexico, it is a reenactment of Mary and Jospehs search for lodging. It’s observed from December 16th to December 24th. It is celebrated with Singing, Caroling, Candelight processions and finally piñatas which symbolize faith and overcoming sin before Christmas Day.
